Are you not happy with your smile? You can now skip the orthodontist and discover what porcelain veneers can do for you. Porcelain veneers can treat several issues at once without spending undue time in the dentist’s chair. As one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments out there, it’s no wonder that people choose this treatment time and time again to instantly renew the look and feel of their smiles.

If you want to boost your confidence this summer, read on to learn more about what porcelain veneers can do for you.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

A Porcelain veneer is a thin covering that goes over the front of your tooth. This thin piece of porcelain is custom-made and designed to specifically fit your both. It’s a conservative treatment and requires little-to-no tooth modification, leaving most of your original tooth structure intact.

With veneers, we can match almost any shade, shape, or contour and the color will not fade or turn yellow overtime. However, as with any dental restoration, veneers may chip or wear over the course or time, but most patients who take good care of their teeth will have veneers that last upwards of 15 years.

Candidates for Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are ideal for patients who have one or more of the following current issues with their smile:

  • Stains and discoloration
  • Chips and small missing pieces
  • Decay
  • Crookedness
  • Gaps between the teeth

Medical News Today explains that veneers improve the appearance of a person’s teeth and are best for patients who want a long-term solution to persistent cosmetic dental issues. Veneers greatly benefit patients who have not responded to other dental treatments, like teeth whitening, braces, or retainers.

The Process

Step One

Adding veneers to your smile will take a few trips to the dentist. Typically, your first appointment will be a consultation. During this, we will examine your mouth and make sure that you are a candidate for this treatment. From there, we will take X-rays and take impressions of your teeth if needed.

Step Two

WebMD explains that once it is determined that you can go forward with the procedure, we will prepare the tooth/teeth for a veneer. Your dentist will begin by reshaping your natural tooth’s surface, that way there is enough room for the veneer to sit. Next, an impression will be made of the teeth receiving veneers and those models will be sent out to a dental laboratory to be created. Waiting on the impressions to come back will take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks, but temporary veneers can be used in the meantime.

Step Three

After your veneers come in, your dentist will place them on your tooth and examine its fit, color, and appearance. He will repeatedly remove and trim the veneer to achieve the perfect fit for your smile before permanently attaching it to your tooth with cement.

To end the procedure, your dentist will remove any excess cement, check and adjust your bite as needed, and have you come back for a follow up in a few weeks to check how you’re adjusting to your new smile.

Pros and Cons

Having your smile redone with veneers comes with a number of advantages, such as:

  • They look like natural teeth.
  • Your gums tolerate porcelain well.
  • Porcelain veneers are stain resistant.
  • A color can be selected to whiten your smile.
  • They don’t require as much shaping as crowns, yet they are stronger and often look better.

While there are many benefits, there are a couple of downsides that patients should consider. Those being that veneers:

  • Cannot be undone.
  • Cost more than composite resin bonding.
  • Cannot be repaired if they chip or crack and they can dislodge and fall off, though not common.
  • Can cause tooth sensitivity.
  • May not match the exact color of your other teeth and color can’t be altered once it is cemented in place.
