Tooth-colored fillings are one of the most popular ways to treat a cavity and restore a tooth’s prior strength following a cavity. Historically, patients with cavities were treated with silver amalgam (metal) fillings. As technology and dental science has progressed, dentists are now able to offer tooth colored fillings (also referred to as white fillings or composite fillings.) Stonebrook Family Dental offers composite fillings to give our patients an attractive and natural-looking solution after cavities are found.
How Tooth Colored Fillings Got Their Start
Tooth colored fillings made a splash beginning in the 1990s, as concern grew about the mercury content in silver amalgam fillings. Because composite fillings blend into the color of your tooth they are often chosen by patients over metal fillings. Mercury-free fillings also give patients more peace of mind when needing to treat a cavity.
How Does a Composite Filling Work?
Composite, tooth colored fillings are composed of a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture that is placed into the cavity, layer by layer. Following the installation of each layer, it is cured (hardened) by a specific light before the next layer is put on. This establishes the filling’s unique strength and durability. Once the filling has been placed, Dr. Varley will polish the composite so that it looks natural and to help prevent staining. Dr. Varley can mix shades in order to provide you with a customized composite that closely matches the color of your teeth.
Advantages of Composite, Tooth Colored Fillings
Composite, tooth colored fillings offer a natural look for patients that need a cavity treated. Metal fillings are more noticeable in the mouth and can cause distractions that patients don’t find desirable. Tooth colored fillings provide a reliable product that is designed to endure for several years.
Retain More of the Natural Tooth
White fillings allow Dr. Varley to use very conservative removal of tooth structure. Old silver fillings require more tooth structure to be removed for the filling material to have adequate strength. With the invention of white, tooth colored fillings and the advancement of the materials, very small amounts of tooth structure are removed.
What to Expect When Receiving a Composite Filling
As soon as a cavity is discovered, it will need to be filled. Dr. Varley can discuss the type of material you would prefer for your filling. If you choose to have a tooth colored filling, Dr. Varley will start by first removing the cavity. Once it is removed, a gel is placed on the tooth that roughens up the tooth surface in the area of the cavity. With this roughened tooth surface, a bonding agent can then be applied that will allow for the placement and retention of the tooth colored filling. Stonebrook Family Dental uses the newest and best material for the white colored fillings. Our experience in the placement of the white colored fillings provides for optimal longevity of the restoration.
Who is A Candidate for Tooth Colored Fillings
If you are looking for a long-lasting, attractive option to treat a cavity, consider the beauty and strength of composite fillings. Patients of all ages are usually eligible for composite fillings. Fillings are a necessary part of the cavity treatment process to prevent the decay from progressing in the tooth.
Out with the Old and In with the New
In addition to having new cavities filled, some patients desire to have their old, silver fillings replaced with composite resin. Patients often report that they feel that without the distracting metal fillings in their mouth, they smile more, feel younger, more attractive, and can feel a real boost in their self-confidence. Our experienced team is dedicated to restoring your tooth to a healthy, attractive state.
