As modern technology has advanced, the options for orthodontic care have increased so that patients can get the straight teeth that they want in the most discreet way possible. Invisalign is a great option for patients who need orthodontic treatment but don’t want the look of traditional metal braces. By using clear, removable aligners, Invisalign offers patients a braces-free option for straighter teeth without getting in the way of everyday life. Find out how Invisalign works and how it can improve your confidence with this guide!

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Orthodontic care has advanced tremendously in the past few decades, allowing patients to choose what type of orthodontic treatment that they receive. Traditional metal braces were one of the only options that patients had to straighten their teeth, and while they were effective, the look and bulkiness of the various wires and brackets were major setbacks for many. Patients now have the option of straightening their teeth in an indiscreet way through Invisalign. Invisalign straightens teeth with clear, removable aligners that can easily be taken out to eat, brush teeth, play instruments and participate in sports. Just like traditional braces, Invisalign can fix crowded teeth, gap teeth, underbite, overbite, crossbite and generally straighten teeth, but it does so without anyone else knowing. As you start Invisalign treatment, you will be given custom-fit aligners to wear for one to two weeks at a time, which will need to be worn for 20-22 hours each day. You’ll meet with your orthodontist every six to eight weeks to monitor tooth movement and pick up your next batch of aligners.

Although Invisalign aligners provide invisible treatment for patients, treatment time typically takes longer than traditional metal braces. The cost of Invisalign is also significantly higher than braces, with some estimates averaging treatment costs between $3,500 and $8,000 while traditional braces only cost between $2,500 and $6,000. The cost varies depending on the extent of your orthodontic needs and how many aligners you have to use to complete treatment, so being evaluated by your orthodontist will be necessary to decide which of the two options would work best for you.

Benefits of Invisalign

The most obvious benefit of Invisalign is the inconspicuous treatment that it provides for patients who need orthodontic care but don’t want the look of traditional metal braces. You also have the freedom to remove your aligners whenever you need to eat, drink or be active without worrying about damaging any brackets or wires. Although you should still be careful about what foods you eat during care, with Invisalign, you can still eat sticky foods, candies and gum that are typically prohibited with traditional braces. If you play a wind instrument, like the flute, tuba or trumpet, it can be difficult to play correctly with braces in the way, but that doesn’t happen with Invisalign. You simply remove the aligner, play the instrument and replace it once you’re done. Lastly, brushing and flossing is a cinch with Invisalign because you don’t have to weave floss under the wires or brush around brackets. Oral hygiene is much easier to stay on top of whenever you have the ability to control it yourself without braces getting in the way.

Importance of Good Oral HygieneOrthodontic toothpaste, toothbrush and teeth cleaning devices

Committing to a good oral hygiene routine before, during and after treatment will help keep your teeth free from decay, helping you finish treatment quicker. Whenever you remove your Invisalign aligner, make sure to brush it gently with a toothbrush to remove food particles and bacteria that may be growing there. Brushing and flossing between your teeth is especially important to do after you eat and drink, just like with traditional braces, because food can stay fixed in your aligner if your teeth aren’t cleaned properly, letting acid build up on your teeth. Make sure that the toothpaste that you use has fluoride in it to help build strong teeth during treatment, as well. For additional protection, consider using mouthwash to destroy acid-causing bacteria and maintain fresh breath wherever you go.
