Do you know the benefits of cosmetic dentistry? Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the dental aesthetics of your teeth. This includes color, position, shape, size, and alignment for the overall appearance of your smile. Here is how cosmetic dentistry can boost your confidence this new year, and what your options are.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry differs from general dentistry in that it refers to customized dental treatments that focus on how your teeth and gums look. When you come in for cosmetic dentistry treatments, you come in to focus on improving the dental aesthetics of your teeth, like their color, position, shape, size, and alignment for your overall smile appearance. Cosmetic dentistry is typically elective rather than essential, but in some cases these treatments can also provide restorative benefits. Crest explains that cosmetic dentistry procedures can include:

Inlays and onlays

These are also indirect fillings, which are what we use when a tooth has mild-to-moderate decay, or when there is not enough tooth structure to support a filling. Inlays and onlays are a composite resin material and attach to the teeth with adhesive dental cement. They provide support to strengthen teeth, restore their shape, and avoid any further decay or deterioration.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding repairs decayed, damaged, or discolored teeth using a material that resembles the color of tooth enamel. The dentist will drill out the decay and apply the composite onto the tooth’s surface, finishing by sculpting it into the right shape before curing it with a high-intensity light. This effectively covers the damage to the tooth and gives the appearance of a healthy tooth.

Veneers

Typically manufactured from medical-grade ceramic, dental veneers are made individually for each patient to resemble their natural teeth. They look realistic, and can be the answer to a number of different cosmetic problems. This includes crooked teeth, cracked or damaged enamel, or noticeable gaps between teeth. The dentist will apply the veneer to the front of each tooth using a dental adhesive.

Teeth whitening

One of the most common and easy cosmetic dentistry procedures is teeth whitening. Whitening can be done to get an even lighter color than your teeth’s original color, depending on the end result you’re looking for. As we age, teeth can easily become stained by food, drinks, medication, smoking, and more. In addition to an in-office treatment, at Stonebrook Family Dental, we also offer UltraDent Take-Home whitening gel and custom whitening trays that you can use from the comfort of your own home. If you don’t want to choose, you can do a combination of both treatments.

Implants

Dental implants are what we use to replace teeth after tooth loss. A titanium screw will go into the jaw at the site of the missing tooth. This will serve as support for a crown. Missing teeth can be a challenging obstacle to get the smile you desire, but implants can permanently solve your problem.

Cosmetic dentistry is aimed at creating a positive change to your teeth and to your smile, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry explains. However, they explain, esthetic dentistry must compliment the overall general and oral health of the patient.

If you have cosmetic work done to improve your smile, you still need to care for it by sticking to a diligent oral hygiene routine and visiting your dentist for professional cleanings and exams often.
